Update: Bond Approved May 3, 2025

On May 3, 2025, Abilene voters approved a $20 million bond to help fund the Terminal Expansion & Improvements Project at Abilene Regional Airport. This local investment, combined with up to $50 million in anticipated Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants, will allow ABI to move forward with critical upgrades that support current demand and prepare for future growth.

Built in 1968, the Abilene Regional Airport terminal has undergone several upgrades over the years. This new project is designed to reduce congestion, improve accessibility, and modernize aging infrastructure. Airport staff will now continue working with the FAA to secure grant funding and finalize design and phasing plans with our architect—focused on delivering a project worthy of this great city.

What Will Change?

Modernization of the Terminal

Increased Capacity

The terminal’s capacity will be expanded to accommodate more passengers, ensuring smoother flow through security and boarding areas. The upper-level drive will be removed, and airline and rental car counters will be relocated to a larger first-floor lobby to reduce congestion and improve efficiency. The expanded boarding area will include a semi-enclosed balcony with airfield views, offering a comfortable and scenic space for travelers before departure.

Improved Amenities:

Travelers will benefit from new, energy-efficient windows, new restrooms, more seating, enhanced vending, and additional spaces for events and relaxation.

Funding Breakdown

The total estimated cost of the project is $70 million, supported by:

This $20 million local investment will result in an estimated increase of approximately $13.43 per year—or about $1.12 per month—for every $100,000 of assessed property value.

This combined funding approach ensures Abilene can invest in critical airport infrastructure with substantial federal support.
