Planning to fly soon? There’s an important travel change coming—and we want to make sure you’re ready.
Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require all passengers 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification (such as a valid passport) to board domestic commercial flights.
How do I know if I have a REAL ID?
Check your driver’s license or state-issued ID. If you see a star in the upper right corner, you’re good to go! If you don’t see a star, your current ID is not REAL ID-compliant, and you’ll need to visit your local DPS office to upgrade.
Why is this change happening?
The REAL ID Act is a federal initiative aimed at improving the security of state-issued identification. It was passed by Congress in 2005 and is now being fully implemented at all airport security checkpoints.
Don’t wait until the last minute!
Upgrading to a REAL ID requires certain documentation and a visit to the DMV, so we encourage travelers to take care of it ahead of time to avoid last-minute travel disruptions.
